Rome and Paris: a tale of two cities
While artificial intelligence is certainly important, I do not want this substack to be limited to AI and, today, I want to talk about something different and compare two of the most renowned cities in the world, Roma and Paris.
Rome and Paris are two of the most famous and beloved cities in the world and each city has its own unique charm and appeal. I grew up in Rome and lived for two years in Paris, and of course I visited both of them many times even after moving out and living in Washington, DC and New York.
Both Rome and Paris are known for their buildings and art, but Rome's architecture is more diverse and historical. Rome is home to some of the most important architectural marvels in the world, such as the Colosseum (one of the wonders of the modern world), the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, the Trevi fountain, the Spanish steps, piazza Navona, St. Peter’s Basilica, etc. The Colosseum is an amphitheater that was built in 70-80 AD, and it is still standing today. It was the site of many gladiatorial battles and other public spectacles, as well as many modern films. The Pantheon was originally built as a temple to all the gods and it is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings in the world. The Roman Forum was the center of political and social activity in ancient Rome, and it is home to many ancient ruins and monuments. The Trevi fountain has appeared in countless movies, and of course St. Peter’s Basilica and square, home to the Pope and seat of the Catholic Church, the religion of over a billion people in the world, is a marvel with many treasures inside, such as Michelangelo’s La Pietà .
Paris, on the other hand, is known for its Gothic and Baroque architecture, including the Notre Dame Cathedral, and the many other churches, but also the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, or the Palace of Versailles, which is not far from the city. While these structures are certainly impressive, they do not have the same historical significance as the buildings in Rome. Additionally, many of the buildings in Paris are relatively modern, whereas the buildings in Rome are thousands of years old.
Another aspect of Rome that makes it a more romantic and beautiful city is its food. Italian cuisine is famous all over the world, and Rome is no exception. The city is known for its pasta dishes, such as spaghetti carbonara and pasta alla gricia, as well as its pizza and gelato. Rome is also home to many traditional Italian cafes and restaurants, where you can enjoy a delicious meal while soaking up the atmosphere of the city.
In contrast, you can certainly eat delicious croissants and macarons in Paris, and while they are certainly delightful, they cannot compare with Italian pastries, and nowhere in Paris can you get as good an espresso or cappuccino as in Rome. While some love French cuisine, it is not as good as Italian cuisine. A recent ranking (https://www.tasteatlas.com/best/cuisines) put Italian cuisine as first in the world, and French cuisine is only at number nine in the list.
Rome is also home to many famous museums of art, such as the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery. These museums are filled with priceless works of art, including sculptures, paintings, and other decorative art.
Paris is also known for its art, including the Louvre Museum, which is home to the famous painting, the Mona Lisa (though it was painted by an Italian, Leonardo da Vinci). However, Parisian art is more focused on a narrower historical period, whereas Rome's art is more diverse and spans many different time periods and styles.
Rome has also a deep romantic feeling with its narrow, winding streets that lead to hidden squares and fountains. Strolling around Piazza Navona is a unique experience, similarly walking across the bridge towards Castel Sant’Angelo or sitting on top of the Spanish steps and watching the city.
While there are certainly romantic spots in Paris, such as the Seine River and Montmartre, they do not have the same charm and history as the landmarks in Rome.
In conclusion, Rome is a much more romantic and beautiful city than Paris. It may also be more chaotic and less organised, but it is because of this that it is more charming and rich of personality with more varied food, while Paris can be beautiful but colder, sometimes aseptic and less enveloping.
