Dear Valentino,

I have a question, if nature is dumb, what references do we have to compare it?, I mean, if we see the evolution of any part of the human body, such as the eyes, can we say that its evolution is arbitrary?

The evolution, or rather the mutation, is arbitrary or random. However, what mutations do not get lost, which in turn define evolution, is not, because only “good” mutations remain. The meaning of “good” is relative to the environment. For example, in a primitive world where oxygen concentration were higher than today, mutations that made insects bigger were advantageous and remained, when oxygen levels started to drop, they stopped being advantageous (insects do not have lungs and cannot survive if oxygen concentration is too low and they grow too big) and this is why insects are now small compared to millions of years ago.
